It provides many advantages like cheaper call rates all over the world, efficient usage of IP bandwidth etc. Many countries already adapted this technology in various domains including public telecommunications. Internet almost reached everywhere in the world. Countries like USA, England, France provides high speed internet at very low cost within their countries. This allows VoIP to play a major role. Since VoIP uses IP network to make calls it dramatically reduces the cost of communication almost to zero.
VoIP provide flexibility through adapting it with existing technology like PSTN, GSM etc. This is done by making use of a special device called gateway. A gateway can merge two different types of networks and allow them to communicate. Hence it is possible to communicate any network in the world through VoIP using gateway.

Considering all the above factors and sensing the future of VoIP this project is started developing. The ultimate motivation of this project is to develop a VoIP server that runs on low power embedded device which provide the full functionality of VoIP.
And hence Asterisk was made to run on beagleboard .
